Film 01: Echoes of the Empire: Beyond Genghis Khan

Echoes of the Empire: Beyond Genghis Khan (2022) is a recently released documentary film about Mongolia produced by Robert H. Lieberman and Deborah C. Hoard (Journeyman Pictures).

What may be of particular interest to readers of my blog is that one of the two main actors is Mongolia’s highly-regarded poet-scholar Gonbojav Mend-Ooyo. The other is American author Jack Weatherford. Over the years, I have had the privilege of many insightful conversations with G. Mend-Ooyo as we travelled the long distances in vehicular convoy to and from Ulaanbator to the more remote regions of Mongolia for conferences and other cultural events.

ERRATA: My apologies. The following soundscape emerged from a poem by another of Mongolia’s wonderful poets Ts. Tsolmon. It was initially acknowledged as such in the music video along with its detailed academic reference citation. The following text has now been updated. The remainder of this post remains unchanged.

In 2017 I composed the soundscape Fluxus in F for Adriana based on one of Ts. Tsolmon’s beautiful poems for a friend with whom I was studying in Switzerland and who was at that time working on her PhD. In 2019 Adriana T. Piza completed an exemplary piece of Buddhist analytical scholarship through the Department of Philosophy, University of Sao Paulo in Brazil. If you are interested in such topics, her thesis The Buddhist Concept of Selflessness According to Je Tsongkhapa is available here in the public domain.  Congratulations Adriana, such a complex piece of research scholarship —  well done!

G. Mend-Ooyo brings genuine depth and Mongolian authenticity to projects with which he is involved. Much of his poetry is available in the English language through the recent contribution of his primary translator Simon Wickham-Smith.

The documentary film Echoes of the Empire: Beyond Genghis Khan (2022) is now available to stream on Apple TV.
